WHO/Europe has launched a new online data platform, developed with support from the European Union, to help monitor and visualize regional and country-level progress in pursuit of the goals and strategic priorities of the European Immunization Agenda 2030 (EIA2030).

Progress is measured based on 23 indicators in a range of areas, from immunization coverage to disease surveillance and immunization programme functions. These indicators are set out in the EIA2030 implementation framework and technical annexes such as the compendium of indicators, which defines the milestones to be reached by 2026 and targets for 2030 as agreed upon by Member States of the WHO European Region.

The targets include, for example:

  • elimination of measles and rubella in all 53 Member States;
  • 60% of Member States reaching coverage targets for 4 key vaccines in the national immunization schedule; and
  • a 50% reduction in the percentage of countries that have evidence of under-immunized populations at the subnational level (compared to 2019).

Holding stakeholders accountable

By bringing together and visualizing the data reported annually to WHO by Member States, the dashboard will help monitor progress and ensure accountability for EIA2030 implementation by Member States, partner agencies, national and regional institutes of public health, and civil society organizations.

It will also provide a systematic approach to identifying data quality gaps, paving the way for stronger data systems and more effective use of data for action.

In addition to developing the dashboard, WHO/Europe has engaged with Member States to validate data submitted since 2019, leading to improved data completeness and quality. The data and progress are also published annually in an EIA2030 technical progress report and reviewed by the European Technical Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (ETAGE), which provides recommendations to WHO and Member States on how to accelerate progress towards EIA2030 targets.
