Placer County officials are advising travelers to expect delays due to winter weather conditions, icy roads, low visibility and snow-packed surfaces along major roadways in the Sierra Nevada and throughout North Lake Tahoe.

Winter driving conditions can change rapidly with inclement weather. To ensure a safe journey:

- Plan ahead. Check road conditions regularly at quickmap.dot.ca.gov and monitor weather forecasts frequently.
- Carry tire chains, even if driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Practice installing them – don’t wait until you’re in a snowstorm.
- Reduce speed. Posted speed limits are for ideal conditions, not snow and ice-covered roads, or low visibility conditions. Driving too fast is the leading cause of winter crashes. Remember, it’s not just about getting there, it’s about getting there safely.
- Increase following distances to allow for extra stopping time on slick surfaces.
- Don’t drive distracted - stay focused on the road.
- Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, food, water, a flashlight and extra batteries.
- Keep your vehicle fueled in case of unexpected delays, closures or emergencies. Having enough fuel ensures you can keep your vehicle running for warmth and make it to your destination safely.
- Watch for snowplows - never pass them unless directed.

Travelers in the North Lake Tahoe region should consider available transit and shuttle options. The county offers many free transit services, including Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit and TART Connect. If you have travel plans with family and friends, carpooling is strongly encouraged. The TART bus service is free and runs from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tahoe City, Truckee and the north and west shores with a direct stop in Olympic Valley.

TART Connect is an on-demand and door-to-door shuttle service that provides free, app-based ride-share services. TART Connect offers service between Olympic Valley and Tahoe City from 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 7 to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays. Additional service is offered in three different zones around the north and west shores of Lake Tahoe from 8 a.m. to midnight every day along state Route 267 between Northstar and Kings Beach.

District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson is inviting the community to a virtual town hall meeting next week to hear updates regarding the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Phase 2 housing amendments for the Tahoe Basin Area Plan in North Lake Tahoe.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Monday, March 10, and will be live-streamed on Zoom.

Last month, the Placer County Board of Supervisors directed county staff to initiate an environmental review process to align the county’s Tahoe Basin Area Plan with the TRPA’s recommended housing amendments. These amendments, which focus on 100% deed-restricted housing projects, aim to support affordable, moderate-income and local workforce housing in the region.

The TRPA first adopted the amendments in its regional plan and code of ordinances in 2023 following two years of study and recommendations from the Tahoe Living Working Group, a committee set up by TRPA to propose three sets of local housing amendments. TRPA will proceed with adopting the amendments in the Placer County Tahoe Basin Area Plan, with the amendments scheduled for review by its governing board March 26.

The TRPA has mandated that all local jurisdictions adopt these amendments within one year or propose viable alternatives that meet the same objectives. On Feb. 4, the board advised staff to move forward with the environmental study, which is expected to take up to 12 months and is required under the California Environmental Quality Act. Placer County must complete the review before the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors consider the item.

We're seeking stories from individuals and families affected by the housing shortage in North Lake Tahoe.

We know how difficult the rising cost of housing has made it for locals and many of eastern Placer's employers rely on employees who face a shortage of affordable rental options and are often forced to live far from work or in overcrowded situations.

To alleviate these issues, Placer County is working with its partners to increase the availability of housing options for a variety of income types and working to introduce new projects and programs.

We also want to hear from you! We created an Engage Placer webpage to provide a space for you to share your housing challenges and detail your unique situation in an effort to inspire future community programs and projects and inform staff.
