OLYMPIA — A new law backed by Rep. Steve Tharinger of Port Townsend is poised to make Washington’s health care system more transparent by improving public access to the All-Payer Claims Database (APCD).
House Bill 1382, sponsored by Tharinger, eliminates an exemption for “proprietary financial information,” bringing the state database in line with federal transparency rules. The update is expected to make the APCD more accessible and user-friendly for the public, including patients, providers, and policymakers.
Tharinger says the database plays a vital role in identifying areas for cost savings and evaluating how well health policies serve Washington residents. He views the new law as an important step toward more effective, consumer-focused health care in the state.
The changes under HB 1382 are expected to take effect later this year.
