Closures

Closures and detours may take place due to improvement projects, repairs and weather-related events. Find information on temporary facility closures and trail detours in DNR facilities, including state-designated trails, boat launches, parks and campgrounds. Intermittent closures may not always be posted.

Ice storm updates

Following severe ice storms, Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a 12-county disaster in northern Michigan. DNR staff are currently assessing damage and conducting cleanup at these sites, prioritizing public and staff safety.

  • Cheboygan Lock closure extended through May 23, 2025

    The reopening of the Cheboygan Lock in Cheboygan has been postponed to May 23 due to slight construction delays in the $5.96 million critical repair project. The renovation project includes dewatering the lock chamber, replacing the miter gate sills, and upgrading the hydraulic system. The anticipated reopening date is May 237, 2025. (updated 5/10/25)

  • Allegan State Game Area Trowbridge Dam boat launch closed until 2027

    The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trowbridge Dam boat launch and canoe/kayak portage, at the intersection of 26th Street and the Kalamazoo River in Allegan County, will be closed until 2027 as part of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Kalamazoo River cleanup project. The boat launch is located within Allegan State Game Area. Hunting and fishing access along the Kalamazoo River will be limited during this time. Recreational users should plan ahead and expect to exit the river at Pine Creek and Fox Mountain/Bittersweet public access areas.   • Aloha State Park campground open following ice storm damage (Cheboygan County)

    The park has reopened the campground following the severe March 28-30 ice storm in northern Michigan. Please note that the park may look different with more open spaces, damaged trees and extra natural debris, and some areas of the park may still be closed, such as trails. As our restoration efforts continue, you may also notice and hear noise from cleanup crews.

  • Aloha State Park campsite closures

    Campsites #1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29 and 54 are currently without electricity due to an unexpected issue. These sites are available at the semi-modern camping rate. Generator use is not allowed. Additionally, due to ongoing issues with groundwater, campsites 15, 18 and 19 are closed until further notice. (updated 12/19/24)

  • Arfelin Lake Boating Access Site temporarily closed (Marquette County)

    Spring snowmelt and flooding have forced the temporary emergency closure of the Arfelin Lake Boating Access Site until road repairs can be made. Culverts and the dirt access road have failed, and water is moving swiftly. DNR staff is consulting with legal experts, landowners, residents and personnel from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. (updated 4/25/25)

  • Au Sable River Trail section closed indefinitely

    Due to current footpath bridge conditions along the Au Sable River Trail, a section of trail is closed indefinitely. A series of five structures will need to be engineered and funded. The construction timeline is unknown at this time. The remainder of the trail remains open, although an out-and-back route will be necessary (counterclockwise direction recommended).   • BA (Freda Grade) Route remains closed

    Due to 2018 storm flood damage, the BA (Freda Grade) Route remains closed; however, funding for partial trail repairs have been approved. View interactive ORV map. (updated 4/4/22)

  • Bald Mountain Recreation Area Lower Trout Lake beach area closed Sept. 3, 2024, to May 23, 2025

    Due to a planned enhancement project to replace the toilet building adjacent to the designated swimming beach on Lower Trout Lake, the beach area inside the day-use area is closed Sept. 3, 2024, to May 23, 2025. A proposed $3.9 million in federal relief funding from Gov. Whitmer's Building Michigan Together Plan made these and other renovations possible. (updated 2/15/24)

  • Bankson Lake boating access site temporarily closed due to high water (Van Buren County)

    Due to continued high water, Bankson Lake boating access site is temporarily closed due to impacts caused by high water. County drain commissions are working on a plan to help resolve the issue. Water levels will be reevaluated in spring 2025. (updated 2/18/25)

  • Bay Port Boating Access Site temporarily closed May 12 through June 2025 (Huron County)

    The Bayport Boating Access Site, located on Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay, is closed for second-phase improvements May 12 through the end of June. There are alterative access sites available, including Fillion Road Boating Access Site, located 4 miles away via M-25 east to Fillion Road, and Sumac Island Boating Access Site, located 6.2 miles away via M-25 west to Geiger Road.
