On this 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, we remember the lives lost and the heroes who answered the call. Today, we honor the heroes who stepped forward in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. Their bravery and sacrifice remind us of the strength of this great nation. On that day, the EEOC’s New York District Office, located in 7 World Trade Center, was destroyed in the collapse. Thankfully, all employees were safely evacuated before the building fell. Days later, New York firefighter John Misha discovered something extraordinary in the wreckage: the EEOC’s official seal. It was returned to the agency and remains on display today. The seal serves as a powerful reminder of our country’s resilience and the enduring spirit of public service. We will never forget.

About us
The EEOC, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, enforces federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits. We also work to prevent discrimination before it occurs through outreach, education and technical assistance programs. #ICYMI, the EEOC Office of Federal Operations recently issued three significant appellate decisions reinforcing federal employees’ rights to religious and pregnancy-related accommodations at work under anti-discrimination laws. Religious Accommodations: In Augustine V. v. Dept. of Veterans Affairs and Andy B. v. Federal Reserve Board, the EEOC reaffirmed that federal agencies must provide effective religious accommodations unless they can demonstrate a substantial undue hardship, per Groff v. DeJoy. Pregnancy-Related Accommodations: In Kasie L. v. USPS, the Commission found that denying a new mother access to clean, private lactation spaces, when such facilities were available to her, was unlawful discrimination. Acting Chair Andrea Lucas emphasized, “Religious liberty is a foundational American principle. These decisions remind federal employers that their employees deserve not only equal opportunity, but also equal respect for their religious beliefs and practices.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/esP-S9-A #EEOC #FederalWorkforce #ReligiousAccommodation #PregnancyRights

Acting Chair Andrea Lucas sat down recently with The Daily Caller News Foundation for an exclusive interview highlighting the agency's renewed commitment to upholding religious liberty at work. "Major new settlements and lawsuits over the COVID-19 vaccine mandates, which Lucas called one of the 'greatest civil rights violations' of the past few decades, signal a substantial shift in EEOC priorities since President Donald Trump selected her to lead the agency in January." We’ve All Heard It. An Ounce of Prevention… The EEOC received 688,000 charges of ADA-related discrimination since the law took effect. In fiscal year 2024 alone, more than 33,000 charges were filed with the EEOC, an annual high. Since just June 1, 2025, the EEOC has filed four new ADA lawsuits and achieved eight settlements for more than $1.52 million. Last month, the EEOC sued Walmart for failing to provide an accommodation for a longtime employee, who was placed on unpaid leave, despite having positive performance in the company’s “Temporary Alternative Duty” program. https://lnkd.in/eBKX33ui Here are some steps employers and HR professionals can take today to help prevent disability-related discrimination. -Track how often accommodations are denied. -Understand and communicate the threshold for “undue hardship.” -Empower employees to ask questions an escalate when necessary. Take action: Read the EEOC’s overview of the ADA and disability-related laws and schedule a tailored training day with one of EEOC’s experts, if additional help is needed. https://lnkd.in/e5xtUTRG

A Reasonable Accommodation Is Not Special Treatment—It’s a Civil Right Disability rights at work. #ICYMI, July 26 marked the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Under the ADA, an accommodation can be simple, low-cost (or no cost), and critical to equity. Some examples of an accommodation include: -Screen readers or captioned software -Modified schedules -Ergonomic workstations -Remote or hybrid flexibility The EEOC recently sued an educational publishing company, charging them with failing to provide employees with visual impairments equal access to critical employee information such as benefits, leave, and training. https://lnkd.in/eYnwSQ9h A best practice? Reduce stigma. Develop and normalize a process for employees to submit an accommodation request. Take action: Review your accommodation process. If it’s not easy to find, request, or confidential, commit to improving it. In addition to EEOC resources, the Job Action Network (JAN) may be able to help. (link to JAN) https://lnkd.in/e5xtUTRG

Disability-Related Bias in Hiring Still Happens—Even If It's Unintentional The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination in recruitment, hiring, promotion, and termination—but barriers persist. July 10, a federal appeals court rejected all of Werner Trucking’s arguments and upheld EEOC’s significant win in a disability discrimination lawsuit against the company. The suit charged the trucking company with refusing to accommodate and hire a qualified driver who is deaf, saying they could not hire him because he could not hear. https://lnkd.in/eDJmH_QF As EEO leaders, we must ask: - Are our hiring managers trained on disability-inclusive practices? - Do our job descriptions unintentionally exclude qualified candidates? Online job announcements and screeners can inadvertently exclude applicants with disabilities due to, for example, low color contrast, formatting, and employment test scoring. Take action: Audit one job posting this week with a disability lens. Share what you find. https://lnkd.in/eESNRPbU

EEOC reposted this
I’m honored to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve a second term at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Under President Trump’s leadership, the EEOC is delivering historic results—from settlements with some of the world’s largest law firms regarding their DEI practices, as well as the securing the agency’s largest-ever resolution for victims of antisemitism. I’m proud to continue leading the fight to restore equal opportunity, merit, and colorblind justice in the American workplace. #EEOC #CivilRights #Leadership #EqualOpportunity #HR #EEO #Law #LegalUpdate
