Early Dismissal Reminder- This is just a friendly reminder, the cut-off time for early student dismissal is 2:30 pm. We utilize this time to allow staff to get to their dismissal stations for a safe release of all West Potomac students.
Congratulations to teachers. Lainie Abrams and Jennifer Stoneburg! They were awarded the FCPS Care of the Month from FCPS for their work with our Unified Basketball league. They were up against hundreds of other submissions. Please see the picture below from their celebration.
I also want to say congratulations to the West Potomac Bands.Last weekend they took away awards for All-State- WP had three students successfully audition into one of the three all-state groups.
Nic Ries- Bass Trombone- Orchestra- 1st in the state
Aiden Bratten- Tenor Trombone- Symphonic Band- 6th in the state

PTSA Meeting- March 18 at 6:30 PM, WPHS Library
As a society, we have read too many heart breaking stories about teens who become addicted to drugs or die using them. Protecting our kids is at the heart of what we do each day and yet finding the right words to talk to our kids can be awkward. It’s hard to know what to ask them, what to say, and if you’ll get through to them. But talking about substance use is important for promoting healthy behaviors and as parents educating ourselves on what to look for is a pivotal first step. Please join us on March 18th for a powerful meeting to hear directly from FCPD Officer Brian Mullins, with over 10 years in the Narcotics division, Officer Mullins shares his experiences and knowledge and will speak to identifying trending narcotics, how to identify behaviors, how narcotics are hidden and more as well as answering your questions. This meeting is suggested for parents and guardians only. Please Mark Your Calendars!
PTSA’s Test Prep Program can help you achieve your highest SAT or ACT score.
Test Prep Chair Search is On! Do you have freshman and/or younger students? Well, SAT/ACT tests are in your future. Be on the cutting edge of changes to the official tests and college admissions by chairing the PTSA’s Test Prep Program! No test prep experience is needed just strong organization and customer service skills. Contact Marilyn Aboff, marilynaboff@yahoo.com, to learn more about managing this rewarding program. Planning next school year starts soon. Now is a great time to jump on board and learn the ropes! Perhaps co-chair for a year?
Sophomores – Use your sophomore year to determine your test preference! Take both the ACT and SAT mock during the last semester to see which test is the best fit for you. Start thinking about your test prep timing. The most effective results are seen if you complete your prep no more than two weeks before the official test. Plan on taking the official test three times. If you have completed Algebra 2 or above during sophomore year, consider the fall prep class and official tests. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some or all your official testing completed before winter break of junior year? Studies show no score increase by waiting!
Juniors– When you have completed Algebra 2 or above, you are ready for the official tests! If you still need to determine your test preference, take advantage of the mocks (take one of each test). You’ll still have time to take our online or fall prep class! Just remember to plan your testing and prep schedule around the sports/extracurricular activities! The most effective results are seen if you complete your prep no more than two weeks before the official test. Plan on taking the official test three times. If you are taking Algebra 2 during junior year, target the June official test as your first attempt.
SAT & ACT MOCK TESTS($23.00) Offered in-person on the West Po campus. Laptop required for SAT mocks. Next mocks (SAT and ACT) are 3/29/25 and 5/3/25.

West Potomac Bands had three students successfully audition into one of the three All State Bands:
Nic Ries- Bass Trombone- Orchestra- 1st in the state

Molly Gorman- Clarinet- Concert Band- 24th in the state
These students will travel to Richmond on April 24-26 to perform in the All Virginia Band, Chorus, and Orchestra event.
On March 7-8, West Potomac hosted the District X Concert Band Assessment with the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors' Association (VBODA). Under the direction of Mr. Joe Antonucci, West Potomac had three bands perform their own assessment programs. All groups were incredibly successful! 4th Period Band earned an overall 1 (SUPERIOR). 2nd Period Band earned an overall 2 (EXCELLENT). Our top band, 1st Period Concert band, performed a MAMMOTH Grade 6 (highest level) program spanning almost 30 minutes of performance time, and received straight SUPERIOR ratings from all 4 judges. What all groups are doing is genuinely special.
The results of 1st Period’s SUPERIOR assessment performance combined with the SUPERIOR ratings earned by the Marching Band at their state assessment once again earns West Po the title of Virginia State Honor Band for 2024-25. More than $240 million of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget is dedicated to increasing compensation for our teachers and staff to stay competitive and reduce turnover. Currently, FCPS ranks fifth out of eight neighboring districts in regards to starting salary for teachers with a master’s degree.
Our families expect — and our students deserve — the best teachers.
Next Steps in the Budget Process
The next steps in the FCPS FY 2026 Budget process include the School Board presenting the budget to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, April 22, and then the Board of Supervisors will conduct public hearings Tuesday, April 22, through Thursday, April 24. Cameras Installed on School Bus Stop Arms
Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”).
Warnings for drivers will begin on Wednesday, April 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.
According to Virginia law, drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction (unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped). They should remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus is moving.
We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with us to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that we work with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school.

As you may know, all public schools in Virginia have to perform at certain high levels to be considered accredited by the state. Our school is fully-accredited (and has been for many years) based on meeting previous accreditation standards that included SOL test pass rates, graduation rates, and thresholds for advanced coursework and related career/college readiness experiences.
This is to inform you that this school year, the Virginia Department of Education enacted a new accountability system for all public schools in the commonwealth. All of the information about how this works can be found here, and I encourage you to read about the framework and how the different areas of accountability translate into points for “Overall School Performance” ratings.
All of our students’ work impacts our performance within this new accountability system. I would like all of our families to be informed of this so that we can work together to produce the best outcomes for our students. Also, as the school sends out information and reminders about SOL testing, AP exams, school attendance, and opportunities to increase or recover grades, I want you to see how these fit into the big picture of school accountability.
As noted on the VDOE site, high school performance is rated in 3 categories (Mastery, Readiness, & Graduation). Each category is weighted differently, and within each category are multiple components of student achievement with different point values. See graphics below.
This is a new system, and we are learning more about it regularly. The good news is that we have always had good plans in place to support your students so that they perform well in SOL and end-of-course exams, and we have strong systems for monitoring and supporting students so that they graduate on time.
In the coming weeks, we will publish our SOL testing schedule and exam schedule for students in AP/IB/Dual Enrollment courses. Participation rates and scores in all of these tests is part of the new accountability framework (SOL test participation and scores are factored into the Mastery category, and advanced course (AP, IB, ASVAB, etc.) exam participation and scores factor into the Readiness category in the 3E component). We need your support, as always, to ensure that students study and do their best work on these tests. We also need your support to ensure that they are here and on-time on those test days.
As always, thank you for your partnership. We look forward to making the most of the final four months of school!

Set the stage. Choose a casual environment that’s free from distractions. Talk while driving, taking a walk, or doing chores together.
Make it a two-way discussion. Ask open-ended questions.

Principal’s Message
Wolverine Community,
Happy Friday! This has been a great but busy week at West Potomac High School.
Thank you to our Senior parents, sponsor, and teachers for hosting a wonderful 100-day celebration for our senior class. The seniors truly enjoyed the treat!
I was able to get into quite a few classes this week. Thank you to our Academy Criminal Justice folks for allowing me in to watch their 2024-2025 Criminal Justice Class Serial Killer Draft. During this activity students identify a criminal and conduct research to better understand the investigative and legal process. It was a great class, and I cannot wait to come back to see the students and their presentations.
This week we implemented Hall Sweeps building wide. We hope to see fewer students late to class as we continue this process. Having ten minutes between each class allows plenty of time for students to navigate our large campus. Please remind your students on the importance of being in class on time, every day, every period. Thank you to all the teachers and staff that assisted this week.
Mulch Fundraiser- Support our Wolverine student athletes by purchasing mulch through the Booster Club’s annual sale! Every bag sold directly benefits our sports teams. Learn more and order at www.supportwestpotomac.com by March 1 (while supplies last)!
Senior Families- As we move closer to the end of the school year, I met with seniors that are in danger of being chronically absent this week. Please remember, we need your students present every day until graduation. I want to note that “Senior Skip Days” are not promoted for encouraged by West Potomac.
2024-25 Midyear Secondary Grading Updates Survey- Instructional Services will be conducting a survey in mid-March to gather feedback on grading practices from a sampling of students, staff, and parents/caregivers across all middle and high schools.
The optional survey will be centrally distributed to selected students, staff, and parents/caregivers on March 10 and will run until March 14. In advance of the survey, communication will also be sent to parents/caregivers of students selected for the survey during the week of March 3.
Survey Key Messages
The goal of the survey is to provide feedback on grading changes that were implemented across FCPS this school year.
The survey will not be distributed to all students, staff, and parents/caregivers. It is using a random sampling method that will reach about 15% of these groups.
The survey is completely optional.
Data will be collected and anonymized before being shared with Instructional Services.
The data will be shared with the Secondary Grading Advisory Committee in order to support the group’s decision-making. It may be shared in aggregate with FCPS leadership, including the School Board.
Background
The School Board voted to approve a new policy for secondary grading on December 19, 2024. Most aspects of the policy reflect current practice and requirements.
Notable differences with current practice are 1) move to a single gradebook type, 2) removal of the D- from the grading scale (while keeping the ranges the same), and 3) allowed variation for weighted gradebook categories by content area.
The Secondary Grading Advisory Committee (made up of teachers, principals, SBTS, DSS, parents/caregivers, students, and central office staff) will be meeting this Winter/Spring.
The goals of the advisory committee are to review the impact of grading changes implemented in 2024-25, and to ensure that all current grading regulation and guidance provided to schools are meeting the requirements of the new School Board policy.
In order to gather feedback on the changes implemented this year, targeted focus groups have been or are currently being held with students (at a subset of schools), department chairs, principals, DSS, assistant principals, SBTS, instructional coaches, SOSAs, DSAs/ADSAs, and parents/caregivers who are members of set community groups (e.g., AAPAC, SEPTA, FCCPTA).

PTSA Meeting- March 11 at 6:30 PM, WPHS Library
As a society, we have read too many heart breaking stories about teens who become addicted to drugs or die using them. Protecting our kids is at the heart of what we do each day and yet finding the right words to talk to our kids can be awkward. It’s hard to know what to ask them, what to say, and if you’ll get through to them. But talking about substance use is important for promoting healthy behaviors and as parents educating ourselves on what to look for is a pivotal first step. Please join us on March 11th for a powerful meeting to hear directly from FCPD Officer Brian Mullins, with over 10 years in the Narcotics division, Officer Mullins shares his experiences and knowledge and will speak to identifying trending narcotics, how to identify behaviors, how narcotics are hidden and more as well as answering your questions. This meeting is suggested for parents and guardians only. Please Mark Your Calendars!
PTSA’s Test Prep Program can help you achieve your highest SAT or ACT score.
You’ll still have time to take our spring or fall prep class! Just remember to plan your testing and prep schedule around the sports/extracurricular activities! The most effective results are seen if you complete your prep no more than two weeks before the official test. Plan on taking the official test three times. If you are taking Algebra 2 during junior year, target the June official test as your first attempt.

We need your help to make this first event a success. Donate gently used West Potomac apparel for our merch drive from March 2nd-14th in the main or DSA office. Principal’s Message
Wolverine Community,
Happy Valentine’s Day!
I want to congratulate Senior, Sam Glassman, who is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist nationwide. This is a huge honor for all of Sam’s hard work and dedication. We are truly proud of this Wolverine!
Although it was a shorter week, there was wonderful instruction occurring in our classes throughout the building. This is a picture from my visit to Ms. Veltman’s Spanish class.
I am proud to share that we had a few FCPS Care Submissions this week honoring West Potomac High School. Thank you to our amazing Wolverine Faculty and Staff for all they do each day! See below:
Congrats FCPS Cares Recipients: Jamaal A Dixon and Bryan Lewis
FCPS CARES submission:
Jamaal has been very present in the hallways every day helping to make sure the students are moving to class and has been greeting the students as they walk by - especially in a crowded area of our school near the classrooms. It's very much appreciated - Thank you Jamaal!
FCPS CARES submission:
Bryan has been helpful to bounce ideas off of and seek advice from. He's someone I can check in with to make sure we are all in sync with the focus of lessons; lesson planning; and assessments given to students. He's been helpful in the past two years and I appreciate it highly.
Mulch Fundraiser Support our Wolverine student athletes by purchasing mulch through the Booster Club’s annual sale! Every bag sold directly benefits our sports teams. Learn more and order at www.supportwestpotomac.com by March 1 (while supplies last)!
Please remember, attendance is very important each day. There have been rumors of numerous Senior Skip Days being planned. I want to remind students and families that Senior Skip Days are NOT school sponsored or encouraged.
The Biology information session that was cancelled due to the snow day has been rescheduled for Tuesday February 18. If you student is in a Biology 1 class, please review the e-notify sent that includes a link to register for the event.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Principal’s Message
Wolverine Community,
I hope everyone had a great week. As we conclude National School Counseling Week, I want to again extend my sincere gratitude to our amazing Student Services Department at West Potomac!
As we start the third quarter, I want to remind you that 2nd quarter and 1st semester grades are available in ParentVue. We will only be mailing report cards to those families who have not yet setup their ParentVue account.
This month we celebrate Black History Month. Black History Month began as a way of teaching young people about Black and African Americans' contributions to the US. Today it celebrates Black people’s activism and achievements around the world. In addition, it celebrates Black people's resistance to oppression.
The event begins with a light reception followed by a formal program, From the Threads of Our Past to the Fabric of Our Future. The program will honor the enduring contributions of Black history and culture while envisioning a future rooted in equity and excellence. It will include inspiring performances, personal stories, reflections, and opportunities to connect and celebrate.
The event is open to the entire community.
For more information, contact Nina Thomas, senior manager for Professional Learning and Cultural Responsiveness.
Mark your calendars: PTSA is meeting Tuesday February 11 at 6:30 pm in the library. See flier later in this message for details.
Below is an opportunity for students to apply and get involved. I would love to see a Wolverine student in this role.
This week, in conjunction with our dedicated PTSA we held our Rising Stars celebration. Students are nominated by their teachers for this award. Thank you to our outstanding faculty and staff for the amazing nominations and to your students for being wonderful Wolverines.

Applerouth has 12 test types available and students are welcome to opt in to as many tests as they would like. Students will receive comprehensive score reports, including scoring and feedback on their free-response questions.
SAT & ACT MOCK TESTS($23.00) Offered in-person on the West Po campus. Laptop required for SAT mocks. Next mocks (SAT and ACT) are 2/15/25, 3/8/25, 3/29/25 and 5/3/25.

Principal’s Message
Wolverine Community
Happy Friday Wolverines. With the loss of FCPS students, parents and FCPS employees in the terrible plane accident this week, my Friday message will focus on positivity. Given the Division wide impact of this tragedy, and for legal purposes, all messaging will be coming from our central office for the next few days. Stay tuned for messages from Dr. Reid and FCPS.
Next week is School Counselor Appreciation Week, and we at West Potomac High School want to express our sincere gratitude for our dedicated school counselors. They are truly devoted to our students, generously giving their time and expertise to ensure every student's needs are met. From guiding course selections and academic planning to supporting students' well-being and stress management, our counselors are invaluable. Please join us in thanking them for their exceptional contributions.
I cannot say it enough, but I am truly proud I am the principal at West Potomac High School. Today I was able to walk around and visit a few classrooms and loved seeing all the amazing teachers in action; and all the students engaged and working hard. I really appreciate all the hard work our students and teachers do each day. Thank you to the parents and guardians in our community. We appreciate you. I hope you have a great weekend!

Principal’s Message
Wolverine Community,
I hope everyone had a great week! One quick reminder, this coming Wednesday, January 29 is a teacher workday due to the end of the quarter; students do not attend school.
Thursday night West Potomac was honored at the School Board meeting as an Exemplar School for Continuous School Improvement. I am truly proud of the hard work and dedication of our students and staff.
Congratulations West Potomac High School!
After many conversations with the VA Department of Transportation we have finally convinced them to retime the traffic light at Quander Rd and Belle View Blvd. so that traffic flow is more efficient at dismissal for student drivers and families.
Congratulations to our West Potomac Academy for receiving four significant grants.
The West Potomac Academy Dancers received the Wolf Trap Grant for Performing Arts Teachers.
Partnering with ClancyWorks Dance Company, students will participate in lectures and dance instruction to understand the cultural and historical fundamentals of Hip Hop genres and classical Indian dance styles. Students will then work with artists to choreograph a piece that celebrates the similarities and differences between the genres to be later showcased at their annual spring performance. Through this project, students will gain a better understanding and appreciation for the diversity and richness of dance across cultures.
($5000)
The Welding Academy received a Foundation for Applied Technical Education, Inc (FATE) Program Enhancement Grant. With this generous donation the welding program will be able to purchase consumables to support students in the classroom and through their CTSO (SkillsUSA) competition.
($5000)
Pharmacy Tech:
The project is titled "Enrichment and Enhancement of the Pharmacy Technician Course at West Potomac Academy." The grant funds from Educate Fairfax Grant will be used to establish an updated simulation pharmacy technician lab, equipped with new tools and technology, allowing students to practice essential skills required for their work-based learning experience, which includes 130 clinical hours in a dispensing pharmacy setting. This project supports the FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation, which focuses on the "availability of, accessibility to, and participation in multiple pathways and work-based learning opportunities."
($2000)
Academy Ambassadors:
The West Potomac Academy Ambassadors, along with Edison Academy Ambassadors, Falls Church Academy Ambassadors, and Marshall Academy Ambassadors, have received special funding from Educate Fairfax for a collaborative public speaking training session with iContact Coaching. On February 4th, students from these four academies will participate in a Confident Communication Workshop at West Potomac. Our Academy Ambassadors represent their courses, instructors, and academies at various events throughout the year, and we are excited to build on their presentation skills and self-confidence.

Principal’s Message
Dear Wolverine Community,
I hope all Wolverines enjoyed their extended winter break. Due to the snow, we had to reschedule a few events. Those dates will be later in this message.
I want to give a huge “Shout Out” to our custodial staff for their hard work getting our large campus cleared of most snow and ice, making it safe for our students and staff. We greatly appreciate them!
Congratulations to Spanish Teacher Ms. Yamalie Rodgriguez Figueroa!
FCPS CARES submission:
Mrs. Yamalie exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding educator and community leader, making her more than deserving of an FCPS Cares award. She consistently goes above and beyond for her students, colleagues, and the broader community. Her leadership in initiatives like Girl Up, Lend Hope, Hispanic Leadership, Spanish Honor Society, and the K-6 Enrichment class demonstrates her tireless commitment to fostering growth, empowerment, and opportunity for all. Recently, I approached Mrs. Yamalie with a request to support a project creating holiday cards for Choice, Respect, and Independence (CRI), an organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities. Without hesitation, she mobilized her four clubs to produce over 300 thoughtful, heartfelt cards, embodying the spirit of generosity and care that defines her character. In addition to her full-time teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Yamalie dedicates her Tuesday and Thursday evenings to providing enrichment classes for the children of parents enrolled in English/Literacy courses, ensuring that education is accessible and enriching for families across generations. Her ability to balance her teaching duties with such extensive extracurricular involvement and community service is nothing short of extraordinary. Mrs. Yamalie is a true superstar whose passion, energy, and commitment make a profound and lasting impact on everyone she encounters. She is an invaluable FCPS community asset and deserves this recognition.
Before winter break, PE teachers presented their basketball unit and culminated the unit with a basketball tournament. The picture is the winning team with Principal Statz. Way to go Wolverines!
I am excited about the next few months and working with our Wolverines! Have a great weekend!

Food For Neighbors! Would you like to help students in your area receive the healthy food they need to succeed in school? Even in a county as wealthy as ours, one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger. Through the Food For Neighbors’ Red Bag Program, you’ll make a difference in a local student’s life just by adding a few extra items to your shopping cart five times a year. And the best part - our students will immediately benefit from your generosity! To learn more about how you can help, visit the Food For Neighbors’ website at www.foodforneighbors.org/get-involved.
This week I was able to attend the choral concert, see a fabulous performance with our Wolverine band and honor Mr. Lawrence Cooper as the FCPS Cares of the Quarter for the entire FCPS system. Mr. Cooper had some special guests here to congratulate him.
As we approach the final five school days before break, please remember to make sure your students are coming to school and attending class each day. West Potomac is improving greatly in chronic absenteeism, and we would like to continue this wonderful trend.
Finally I want to extend a huge thank you to our WPHS PTSA for putting together a wonderful Faculty Holiday Celebration this past Tuesday. It was an incredible afternoon and would not have been possible without the many donations and support from the PTSA. If you have not joined, its not too late! Visit this link – it’s a great opportunity to get involved within our community. Below in the PTSA section are a few pictures from the event.

Principal’s Message
In the spirit of civic engagement and reflection, former West Potomac parent Scott Mitchell proudly sponsored the “Essence of Democracy” essay contest for West Potomac seniors. This inspiring competition invited students to delve into the core values and principles of democracy, encouraging them to explore how these ideals shape their lives and communities.
The response was extraordinary, with essays so compelling that the grading committee—Dan Baldwin, Steve Przywara, and Mary Ann Cohen—faced the tough task of selecting the top five. Mr. Mitchell generously offered $1,000 to the first-place winner, along with a $1,000 donation to a charity of their choice.
The winning essay, written by senior Brielle Kirk, captivated the judges with its creativity and thoughtfulness, drawing inspiration from Loung Ung’s powerful words: “When we vote, we take back our power to choose, to speak up, and to stand with those who support us and each other.” Brielle’s essay beautifully emphasized that “the essence of democracy is seeking the good of all people, by using our power to choose our future.”
Impressed by the exceptional quality of all the submissions, Mr. Mitchell extended additional cash prizes to the four talented runners-up: Long To, Jeremiah Harkless, Sabrina Fseisi, and Muhammad Hussain.
The winners were celebrated Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in a special ceremony with Mr. Mitchell and Principal Statz, a tribute to the power of democracy and the importance of participation. Congratulations to all who shared their voices and ideas in this meaningful celebration of democratic ideals!
As we move closer to winter break, please remind your students that we really need students in school every day. We are moving closer to the end of the second quarter, and we want all students working hard and doing their best in their classes.
Have a great weekend!
Jessica Statz, Principal
