Striped Bass Survey

We're from Virginia Tech and are surveying stakeholders to gather insights on Atlantic striped bass stock structure and migration patterns. Your expertise will help refine our model development and management strategy evaluation. Participation will enhance conservation efforts and help provide better scientific advice to managers. All responses are confidential and for research only. Thank you for contributing!

Section 1: Gather stakeholder knowledge and perception of striped bass spatial structure, migration patterns and timing, and potential changes in movements over time.

How many stocks of Striped Bass are there on the Atlantic coast, according to your knowledge? (see the definition of a "stock" from ASMFC here

Do you agree with Figure 1 below about the migration route and stocks of Striped Bass?

Mature striped bass spawn in rivers in early spring. Adults leave spawning areas and migrate north along the coast in spring (green arrows), then further north to New England and the Gulf of Maine in summer (yellow arrow). They return south in the fall (red arrow), spending the winter in the warmer, deeper waters off the coast of NC, VA, and MD, and the NJ-NY Bight region (purple circles). Juvenile striped bass remain in nursery areas (e.g., Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, Hudson River) until they reach a certain size/age and join the coastal migratory population.

If “NO” is selected from the above question, what is your understanding of Striped Bass migration patterns and the number of stocks?

In your experience, at what age and size do Striped Bass move out of the nursery grounds (e.g., Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, Hudson River) and join the coastal migration?

In your experience, when do Striped Bass migrate to or are available in the state where you fish Striped Bass each year? (e.g., mid-May)

Have there been changes in migration patterns or timing changes over the years, according to your own experience?

Clear selection
If you answered "Yes" to question above, tell us more about the changes you have noticed. For example, they migrate to __ state or ___fishing ground earlier (or later) than before. How many weeks earlier or later, based on your best knowledge? (example answer: NJ, one week earlier)
Do you think the migrating timing is linked to climate change? Please respond with Yes or No and add extra comments if possible.

Do you agree or disagree with the idea that it is important to include Striped Bass stock structure (i.e., whether there is one stock or multiple stocks) in the assessment?

Section 2: Demographic information.

Do you fish for Striped Bass, and if so, how would you describe yourself as a Striped Bass fisher? (check all that apply)?

Are you actively targeting Striped Bass?

Clear selection

What year did you start to fish for Striped Bass? How many years have you been fishing for Striped Bass? (e.g., I began to fish in 2000, and over the years, I fished striped bass for about six years.)

Where are you primarily fishing for Atlantic coast Striped Bass?
