Residents Urged to Leave Deer Fawns Alone 🦌

Animal Protection Police and wildlife management specialists receive many calls this time of year about found white-tailed deer fawns. In most cases, fawns are healthy and need no human intervention.

Most white-tailed deer fawns are born in May and June. Newborn fawns are often found on lawns, in flower beds, gardens, bushes or areas of tall grass near homes. It is common for people to encounter white-tailed deer fawns motionless and without their mother, then mistakenly assume it is orphaned or abandoned. In almost all cases, fawns are only temporarily left by their mothers for protection and just need to be left alone.

You should only seek help for a fawn if it is showing obvious signs of injury or distress.

Virginia is black bear country – including Fairfax County.

But while bears are not commonly encountered in our community, multiple bear sightings are reported each spring and summer as bears sometimes wander into residential areas in search of food.

Bears typically avoid humans, but may be drawn into populated areas due to the smell of food around homes. Bears are attracted by bird feeders, garbage, outdoor pet food, compost piles, fruit trees, beehives and berry-producing shrubs.
