Wind Mitigation Resources
Consumers can take advantage of insurance premium savings when installing or implementing windstorm damage mitigation techniques, alterations, or solutions to their properties to prevent windstorm losses. This page is intended to provide a detailed resource to consumers regarding the process of requesting a wind mitigation inspection, updating and submitting necessary wind mitigation forms, and for obtaining information about mitigation programs available (subject to eligibility requirements), and other mitigation resources to benefit consumers.
Wind Mitigation Inspection Process
OIR encourages consumers to be diligent when selecting an inspector to conduct their wind mitigation inspections and verifying that the inspector is authorized under Section 627.711(2)(a), Florida Statutes.

Wind Mitigation Forms
Section 627.0629, Florida Statutes, requires OIR, by January 1, 2025, and every 5 years after that, to review and update the fixtures or construction techniques demonstrated to reduce windstorm damage, along with the related insurance discounts and deductible reductions reflecting the value of such efforts. In June 2024, Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) completed a Residential Wind-Loss Mitigation Study that provides data and analysis on the estimated reduction in loss for wind-resistive building features for residential property insurance. As a result of the ARA study, the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802) is in the final stages of updates. OIR continues to evaluate the Windstorm Mitigation Discount Forms (OIR-B1-1699 and OIR-B1-1700) and the Notice of Premium Discounts for Hurricane Loss Mitigation Form (OIR-B1-1655) for updates.

Consumers may visit their insurer’s website or speak with their agent for additional information about mitigation measures and how to take steps to harden their homes.
Consumers may access Strong Homes Scale, brought to you by the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH). By entering a home address, users receive a customized resilience rating based on local building codes, disaster risk levels, and their home's construction features when it was built.
