Dear Westbriar Families,
As we approach the end of the school year, I want to take a moment to emphasize a critical issue that will impact not just our students today, but the future of our schools and community: the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) budget.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will begin finalizing the county budget on Tuesday, May 6, and the current advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million. Without new revenue sources—such as a proposed meals tax (which would add just $2–$3 to an average family dining bill)—our school division will be forced to make significant cuts.
What’s at stake? Many of the programs and services that make FCPS a nationally recognized school system—programs that go above and beyond the state’s minimum standards—could be reduced or eliminated. These include advanced academic programs, mental health supports, arts education, intervention services, and other resources that ensure we are meeting the needs of every learner.
I encourage all families to visit fcps.edu/crossroads to learn more about what is at risk and how FCPS currently provides more than the minimum required by Virginia.
It often takes the advocacy of our community to ensure that we are fully funded and that our schools remain places where all students can thrive. Your voice matters. Please consider sharing your thoughts with county leaders and staying informed about how decisions are made that affect our classrooms every day.
Thank you, as always, for your partnership and commitment to our students.
Warmly,
Dr. Sallie Burch
Principal
Westbriar Elementary School
On the last day of school, Wednesday, June 11, school will be dismissed at 2:05 PM.
As we move closer to the end of the school year, we understand that family schedules can become increasingly full. However, we kindly ask that you help us maintain a smooth and safe school day by following our early dismissal guidelines:
🕐 When It’s Appropriate to Check Your Child Out Early:
-
Medical Appointments scheduled during the school day
-
Emergencies that require an early pickup
-
Pre-Planned Appointments that have been communicated in advance
🚫 When It’s Not Ideal to Check Out Students:
📧 Important Communication Reminder
If your child needs to leave early, please email BOTH your child’s teacher and our office at
👉 WestbriarElem.Attendance@fcps.edu
This ensures that everyone is informed and we can have your child ready for dismissal in a timely and safe manner.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us protect instructional time and maintain a secure and organized school environment for all students.
Did you know you can receive weekly email reports about your child’s online activity on their FCPS device? Through the Lightspeed Parent Report, you can stay up to date on the websites your child visits, how much time they spend online, and any flagged activity.
This is a helpful way for families to stay connected to their child’s digital learning and ensure safe and appropriate online habits.
If you haven’t already signed up, you can learn more and opt in here: 🔗 Lightspeed Parent Reports
We encourage all Westbriar families to take advantage of this resource to support safe, productive use of school technology at home.
As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, we invite you to share information that may assist us in making the most thoughtful classroom placement for your child.
While specific teacher requests are not accepted, your input is one of many factors we use to build balanced classrooms that support each student’s academic and social success.
➡️ All required questions must be completed in order for the form to be processed.
Please complete one form per child by Friday, May 23, 2025.
