Upcoming Events March Principals' Message

Dear Brookfield Community,

Happy Pi Day! Today, we celebrate the infinite wonder of π (pi), that magical number that goes on and on, like the delicious possibilities of a perfectly circular pie! 3.14159... and beyond! It's a day for math lovers and anyone who appreciates a little bit of numerical mystery.

Speaking of exciting adventures, our amazing 4th graders were up bright and early this morning, buzzing with anticipation, and hopped on the bus to Jamestown! This incredible field trip is a cornerstone of their learning journey, bringing history to life and creating memories that will last a lifetime. We know they're immersing themselves in the past and experiencing firsthand the stories they've been learning about.

A quick reminder that next Monday, March 17, is an early release day. Students will be dismissed three hours early, so please plan accordingly.

And get ready to be amazed! Our fantastic PTA is hosting the annual Science Fair next Thursday, March 20! We've heard whispers of some truly spectacular science displays, and we can't wait to see the creativity our students bring to the table. Mark your calendars for an evening of discovery and fun!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend filled with sunshine and perhaps a slice of your favorite pie! Enjoy the beautiful weather.

Warmly,

Lesley Hassen(link sends email), Principal

Margaret Sisler(link sends email), Assistant Principal

Renovation Updates: Hallways are Being Prepped 🚧

Dust and determination! Our renovation is officially underway. We're thrilled to share these behind-the-scenes glimpses of the exciting work ahead. Hallways are being prepped, and the excitement is building! Follow along for construction updates.

🛑 Cameras Installed on School Bus Stop Arms

Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”).

Warnings for drivers will begin on Wednesday, April 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.

According to Virginia law(link is external), drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction (unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped). They should remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus is moving.

We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with us to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that we work with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school(link is external).

Upcoming Events March Principals' Message

Dear Brookfield Community,

We hope this message finds you well and looking forward to a bright weekend!

We are thrilled to reflect on a truly wonderful Read Across America week. It was a joy to see our students immersed in stories, discovering new worlds, and celebrating the magic of reading. Each day was filled with engaging activities and school spirit that reminded us that every day is a great day to curl up with a good book.

Books are more than just words on a page; they are portals to imagination, knowledge, and understanding. They allow us to explore different perspectives, learn about diverse cultures, and connect with characters who inspire us. Stories matter because they shape our understanding of the world and one another, while fostering empathy, and igniting our creativity. They are the threads that weave together our shared human experience.

We also want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended our PTA meeting this past Tuesday. It's always a pleasure to connect with our families and discuss how we can continue to support our students. Your partnership is invaluable, and we appreciate your commitment to our school community.

Furthermore, Thursday night's Family Science Night was a resounding success! We were delighted to see such a fantastic turnout and witness the excitement as families explored the many engaging science stations. A huge thank you to the Children's Science Center for bringing their incredible expertise and interactive exhibits to our school. We are also deeply grateful to our dedicated staff and family volunteers who made the event possible. Your hard work and enthusiasm created a truly memorable evening of learning and discovery.

As you may have noticed, construction fencing was added this week along the perimeter of our school grounds. This fencing marks the construction pathway and staging area for our upcoming renovations. With construction will come some noise, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we move forward. We will continue to keep you posted as new developments occur and provide timely updates throughout the process. We remain excited for this journey and are fully focused on maintaining student safety and ensuring continued academic success throughout the renovation period.

As we head into the weekend, we wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable time. Please remember that Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, so don't forget to "Spring Forward!"

Thank you for being such a supportive and engaged school community. We look forward to more enriching experiences together.

Sincerely,

Lesley Hassen(link sends email), Principal

Margaret Sisler(link sends email), Assistant Principal

Anthony Ramakis(link sends email), Assistant Principal

News and Notes 📣 Third Graders Take on Story Problems!

In Ms. Maguire’s class, students are sharpening their math skills by solving story problems—on computers and on paper! These challenges help them decide whether to add, subtract, multiply, or divide while also expanding their understanding of bigger numbers.

We’re proud of our students for thinking critically and building strong math skills!

What to see it in action?  Check it out on Youtube(link is external)!

🗓️ Calendar Reminders - Daylight Savings Begins (Spring Forward)

Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

🗓️ Early Release Monday

Reminder that Monday, March 17 is an early release day.

Virginia Run will dismiss students at 1:00 PM.

Any changes to your child’s dismissal for this day must be communicated to the main office at 703-814-8700.

Preparing for Tough Conversations With Teens

Discussing tough topics like fentanyl and other drugs can feel challenging — no matter how close you are with your child. Explain to your teen that it’s important to learn about fentanyl so they know what to do if a friend overdoses. Prepare in advance with the tips below:

  • Set the stage. Choose a casual environment that’s free from distractions. Talk while driving, taking a walk, or doing chores together.
  • Make it a two-way discussion. Ask open-ended questions.
  • Stay patient and reserve judgment.
  • Check in with your child early and often.

📖 Supporting Academic Growth and Reading on Level by Third Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget(link is external) invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan(link is external)

Across FCPS, teachers, staff, parents, and even older students(link is external) are invested in helping our youngest learners grow their love of reading from a strong foundation.

The goal is for students to move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” by the end of the third grade. Reading on grade level is connected to other Strategic Plan goals, including completing advanced coursework and graduating on time.

Last fall, FCPS introduced a new reading curriculum that aligns with evidence-based literacy instruction. Between fall and winter, reading screener results show more than a 4% increase in the number of students in kindergarten to third grade approaching or meeting expectations. Similarly, 3.4% more third graders demonstrate strong foundations of reading and 8.4% more third graders are mastering grade-level standards.

Discover how an elementary school employs a science-based approach, including phonics, to supercharge students' reading(link is external).

🗣️ Connect With Your Kids: Simple Steps to Stronger Communication

Teens skip things that don't interest them, including lectures from their parents. How do you connect with your children and really know what's going on in their lives? How can you become “unskippable”?

Effective communication can build trust and understanding, but it takes thought, planning, and effort.

The latest Healthy Minds Blog offers practical strategies to improve communication and build strong, lasting relationships:

  • Ditch distractions and create a safe space where your child feels comfortable opening up.
  • Listen actively and validate their feelings, even if you don't agree.
  • Ask "how" questions instead of "what" questions to get them talking about their experiences.

For more tips and techniques, read the full article on the Healthy Minds Blog(link is external), which shares information related to youth mental health and wellness.

Upcoming Events February March Principals' Message

Dear Brookfield Community,

We hope this letter finds you well and ready for a relaxing weekend. We are thrilled to share that this week was filled with exciting learning and joyful moments for our students.

We were especially proud to see Brookfield featured on the FCPS Facebook(link is external) and Instagram(link is external) pages! If you haven't already, please take a moment to check out the delightful video of Ms. Lee and Ms. Robinson sharing their enthusiasm with our students through song and dance on a Friday afternoon. It's a perfect example of the vibrant and engaging learning environment we strive to create at Brookfield.

We want to emphasize the importance of attendance and fostering a strong sense of belonging for all our Broncos. We truly cherish the opportunities to connect with our students during dismissal and reconnect at arrival each morning. These interactions, alongside the wonderful connections built within their learning environments, are invaluable in building a supportive and positive school community. We see students collaborating, helping each other, and forming strong bonds that enhance their learning experience every day.

Please remember a few important dates:

  • Monday, February 24: This will be a 3-hour early release day.
  • Thursday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m.: We will be holding our pre-construction community meeting in the cafeteria. This is a vital opportunity to learn more about upcoming construction plans and ask any questions you may have. We encourage everyone to attend. Translation services will be provided.

We wish you a wonderful and restful weekend. We are eagerly looking forward to welcoming our Broncos back to school on Monday morning, ready for another week of learning and growth.

News and Notes Classroom Spotlight: Mrs. Plum’s Class

Mrs. Plum’s students took part in a powerful lesson on Juneteenth and Independence Day. Students engaged in a meaningful compare-and-contrast discussion, reflecting on the historical significance of Juneteenth and the Fourth of July.

These conversations help our students connect history to the present, fostering critical thinking and deeper understanding.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events — including orientation — between January and April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources on hand that they need on the first day of school.

After determining which school(link is external) their child will attend, families should prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms, details can be found on the FCPS kindergarten registration webpage(link is external). FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, visit the kindergarten registration webpage(link is external).

You can schedule an in-person appointment to complete the registration by emailing Hilda Gomez-SIA higomezperez@fcps.edu(link sends email) or calling 703-814-8705 to set it up.

Appointment times are available:

  • Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays - 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of Virginia(link is external), parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents/guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource(link is external) page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet(link is external) for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

📐 Breaking Down the Budget: Supporting Academic Growth and Algebra by Eighth Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget(link is external) invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan(link is external)

Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math.

Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters(link is external)

Upcoming Events February March Principals' Message

Dear Brookfield Community,

We've had a busy and exciting week here at Brookfield! We celebrated the well-deserved retirement of our beloved custodian, Mr. Koo. His dedication to our school has been invaluable, and we wish him all the best in his retirement. We also saw an outpouring of kindness and friendship with our SCA candygram sales. It was wonderful to see students spreading love and sweet treats throughout the week! And let's not forget the fun and festivities surrounding our 100th Day of School! It was a great opportunity to celebrate this milestone and all the learning that has taken place so far this year.

Our students and teachers continue to impress us with their hard work and flexibility. Even with recent weather-related schedule adjustments, they have remained focused and committed to learning. We truly appreciate their adaptability and dedication.

A friendly reminder that Monday, February 17 is Presidents Day, and there will be no school. We look forward to welcoming our Broncos back to our learning environments on Tuesday, February 18.

We hope everyone enjoys a wonderful three-day weekend!

Sincerely,

Lesley Hassen(link sends email), Principal

Margaret Sisler(link sends email), Assistant Principal

Anthony Ramakis(link sends email), Assistant Principal

News and Notes 🗓️ Calendar Reminder: Presidents Day (Holiday)

Personalized Learning in Action in Ms. McNulty’s Class!

At Brookfield, we celebrate the unique ways students learn best! In Ms. McNulty’s kindergarten math class, students engage in independent learning tailored to their needs. Some explore concepts through ST Math, an adaptive online program, while others reinforce skills with paper and pencil. By offering different pathways, we help every child build confidence and a strong foundation in math.

Breaking Down the Budget: Investing in Our Classrooms

Did you know that more than 85% of FCPS’ budget stays in our classrooms? Currently, 92.5% of FCPS staff are school-based, more than neighboring school districts. We are in the middle of FCPS’ annual budget process, which includes opportunities for you to give feedback. Learn more about the proposed FCPS FY 2026 Proposed Budget(link is external) and see the budget timeline.

🏗️ FCPS’ Construction Projects Offer Community-Wide Benefits

The Fairfax County School Board approved the annual update to FCPS’ FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program (CIP)(link is external) at their regular board meeting last week. A CIP is a working budget document that shows the timing and costs of improvement to school buildings, such as renovations, additions, and new schools. Learn more about planned improvements(link is external). Fairfax County Public Schools’ updated plans for new school construction, capacity enhancements, and renovations are outlined in the CIP(link is external). Projects include constructing two new elementary schools; renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools; and relocation of modular buildings.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28

Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student. To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form(link is external) by Monday, February 24. 🐻 It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, between January and April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us prepare and ensure we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Families should prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms on the FCPS kindergarten registration webpage(link is external). FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, visit the kindergarten registration webpage(link is external).

🤧 Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department(link is external)

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage(link is external) for guidance on when your child should go to school.

Learn More About How Your Child Feels at School

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE(link is external) and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener(link is external) webpage.

Proposed Budget Presented to School Board

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid presented the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget(link is external) at the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 23. Watch a video of the presentation(link is external)

As Dr. Reid noted in her January 24 letter to families, “The budget is fiscally responsible and invests in excellence — not just for FCPS, but for all of us in Fairfax County who want a strong community with successful young people, dedicated educators and support staff, and a thriving economy.”

The proposed budget reflects the needs of and FCPS’ commitments to Fairfax County students, families, and community members. It focuses on competitive compensation, including a 7.0% salary increase for all staff to recruit and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students; investing in students who require additional support; and continuing multiyear initiatives such as inclusive preschool and safety and security updates.

Our 3-6 graders enjoyed their first full day in Broncoville this past Tuesday! Seeing them settling into their new learning environments and embracing this exciting chapter in their education is terrific.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their resilience and adaptability during these transitions. They have consistently demonstrated respect, responsibility, and a readiness to learn, even while navigating changing routines.

Can you believe we've reached the halfway point of the school year already? Time truly flies! Our students have made remarkable progress, and we are so proud of their accomplishments.

To celebrate this milestone, we encourage you to take some time to reflect with your child. Students will soon be bringing home their progress reports, providing a valuable opportunity for discussion. Here are a few questions you might consider:

  • What are you most proud of this quarter?
  • What are you excited to learn more about?
  • What is something funny that happened at school recently?
  • Who did you play with today?
  • What is one change you would like to see?

We cherish the strong partnership we have with each of you. We are excited to continue working together and supporting our students' growth and development in the second half of the year.

Please reach out to us if you have any questions. Thank you for sharing your children with us each day. 💛💙

Sincerely,

Lesley Hassen(link sends email), Principal

Margaret Sisler(link sends email), Assistant Principal

Anthony Ramakis(link sends email), Assistant Principal

Fairfax County Public Schools updated plans for new school construction, capacity enhancements, and renovations are outlined in the proposed FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program (CIP)(link is external). Projects include constructing two new elementary schools; renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools; and relocation of modular buildings.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage(link is external)
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness(link is external).

📍 Virtual Community Boundary Review Meetings

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Information

Students in grades 3-6 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, you can contact Hilda Gomez in the front office to learn about setting up a ParentVUE account.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide(link is external) or reach out to our school counselor, Ms. Tandra Jones, at tsjones1@fcps.edu(link sends email).

Winter is Upon Us!

As the weather continues to be below average temperatures, we would like to remind you that students are not permitted to enter the building until 7:55am. There is no staff supervision before this time. Please do not drop off, or allow your student(s) to arrive at school earlier than 7:55am. Additionally, we kindly ask that your student is wearing appropriate winter gear for outdoor activities, as we do still have outside time during the winter months.

📈 Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report(link is external). The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE(link is external)

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS(link is external).

SR&R and Cell Phone Policy Survey

All FCPS families and middle and high school students have received an invitation to participate in a survey about FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)(link is external), cell phone policy(link is external), and cell phone storage(link is external) options. The survey will be available through Monday, February 3. Please take a few moments to share your feedback and help FCPS make informed, inclusive decisions for all of our schools!

Upcoming Events January February Principals' Message

Dear Brookfield Family,

It was a wonderful full week of school with our Broncos! Thank you to the families who were able to attend Wednesday's Doughnuts and Coffee with the Principal. It was a pleasure seeing families, connecting, and answering questions. We will host additional opportunities to connect in the future. Please use this form(link is external) to share topics, times, and any additional information you would like to provide.

Many of our staff and students had the opportunity to balance their learning and prepare for our 3rd-6th grade transition to the newly named Broncoville.

We are committed to providing timely updates as we undergo our renovation, and we welcome any questions you might have along the way.

The following message was sent to everyone who subscribes to the Brookfield Construction News You Choose:

The contract for the construction of our renovation and addition for our elementary school has been fully awarded.   This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Brookfield Elementary School community.   FCPS is thrilled to see this important project move forward.

Hess Construction LLC was selected through a competitive bidding process.   Construction value is $39,860,000.00.  Hess is also the construction contractor for Bonnie Brae Elementary School (currently underway) and has successfully completed multiple FCPS projects.  Hess is committed to completing Brookfield Elementary School addition and renovation on time and within budget.   Construction is expected to begin around January 6, 2025, with an estimated substantial completion date of August 15, 2027.

We understand that construction can bring about some temporary changes, including temporary learning classrooms, noise, and traffic adjustments and we appreciate your patience and understanding as the project progresses.  We will continue to keep you updated with important milestones and any changes that may impact the surrounding community.

A pre-construction community meeting will be held in January.  The meeting date is to be determined.

We appreciate your patience and support as we work to improve our school facilities. Stay tuned for more updates.

We hope you have a peaceful three day weekend, and we look forward to see our students on Tuesday, January 21.

Sincerely,

Lesley Hassen(link sends email), Principal

Margaret Sisler(link sends email), Assistant Principal

Anthony Ramakis(link sends email), Assistant Principal

Renovation Updates What's in a Name?

We are thrilled to announce that our new educational village will be named Broncoville!

This name was chosen through a school-wide voting process, where students and staff had the opportunity to select their favorite from a list of creative suggestions generated by our amazing students.

We believe Broncoville perfectly captures the spirit of our school community. Involving students and staff in this decision-making process was crucial, as it empowers them and fosters a sense of ownership in their learning environment.

We are excited to begin learning and growing in this new space!

Grades 3-6 Student Arrival and Breakfast
  • Breakfast will be served in the same two locations - near the Kiss and Ride entrance and the cafeteria. Students in grades 3-6 will pick up breakfast in the building BEFORE walking through the building to the paved path to Broncoville.
  • Kiss and Ride - arrival and dismissal of students being picked up by car will still be in our Kiss and Ride Lane. Students enter the building in the door by the library and walk through the building. Do not drop students off on the street.
  • Bus Riders will enter through the Front Lobby, get their breakfast and walk to Broncoville.
  • Walkers may walk directly to Broncoville from wherever they enter the school campus - that might be from across the field, the back path or directly from the sidewalk on Lees Corner Road. Walkers who would like breakfast will enter the building and pick up breakfast before going to Broncoville.
Kiss and Ride Safety
  • Families must continue to drop students off in the kiss and ride line. This is essential for the safety of our students and staff.
  • Do not pick up or drop off students in the side parking lot or on Lees Corner Road.
  • New routines and procedures will be in place for students and staff beginning on January 21. Please remain patient and flexible as our students and staff adjust.
Cold and Rainy Weather Preparation

Students in grades 3-6 will be required to walk to and from Broncoville and the main building for arrival/dismissal, lunch, and specials. Please make sure to have students wear appropriate clothing for the weather.

We have received a small amount of umbrella donations for rainy weather. We encourage students to have coats with hoods and shoes that cover their entire foot.

Please reach out to our school counselors (Monica Evans(link sends email) and Tandra Jones(link sends email)) if your childneeds a coat, hat, gloves, etc.

Playground Update

The mulch truck came by Thursday and Friday to fill our relocated playground. As the snow melts and temperatures are warmer, we know our students will be eager to get back outside.

Can We See the Inside of Broncoville?

The heat is on inside Broncoville's classrooms! The admin team ventured out to see the learning spaces this week. The construction crew was finalizing a few things before this weekend's move. The classrooms are ready to be filled with students, staff, and lots of learning!

Upcoming Events January Principals' Message

Dear Brookfield Family,

We are thrilled to welcome our students and staff back to school after the Winter Break and the extended snow days! We hope everyone enjoyed the time off and had a chance to relax and recharge.

You may have noticed some changes on campus, including the relocation of the playground. This is an important step as we continue to prepare for the upcoming renovations and the planned shift of grades 3-6 to the quads in a few weeks.

As we prepare for this exciting transition, it is crucial that all our Broncos continue to feel a strong sense of belonging. To foster this sense of community, classes are currently brainstorming special names for the quads. Students will have the opportunity to vote on their top choices before the move, and the new name will be share with our students, staff, and community.

A huge thank you to our dedicated custodians who worked tirelessly over the past few days to clear the sidewalks and ensure a safe return to school. Their hard work and dedication are deeply appreciated.

We would like to invite parents, guardians, and caregivers to join us Wednesday, January 15 at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria for coffee and doughnuts. This time will be dedicated to share renovation updates, provide support to families with accessing Parent Vue, make connections with one another, and will be an opportunity for families to ask questions.

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to seeing our children back in the building on Monday morning!

Sincerely,

Upcoming Events December January Principals' Message

Dear Brookfield Family,

As we wrap up another fantastic calendar year at Brookfield, we want to express our sincere gratitude for the incredible work and dedication of our students, staff, and families. This year was full of heartwarming moments, from academic achievements to community-building events.

This week, our school was filled with the sounds of music as our talented chorus students performed for their peers and families. Our band and strings musicians also delighted us with their performances each morning. These experiences have not only showcased the artistic talents of our students but have also fostered a strong sense of school spirit and community.

Upcoming Events December News and Notes

Dear Brookfield Family,

This week, I was fortunate to join alongside Chantilly Pyramid Principals for a three-day professional development conference. We had the opportunity to attend various learning sessions and hear from passionate and inspiring keynote speakers. As I selected the sessions in which I wanted to attend, I felt passionate about digging deeper into strategies around continuing to strengthen our school community partnership.

I recognize that the week brought us some unexpected events. As always, Brookfield and FCPS had plans and protocols in place to ensure student safety. I want to commend our staff for their swift response and commitment to our students' well-being. The power of teams was evident as our staff worked together seamlessly to ensure everyone’s safety.

I am grateful for our wonderful PTA and I am looking forward to tomorrow’s Winter Carnival. What a wonderful way to bring our Brookfield Family together and celebrate one another and the holiday season.

Also, a huge thank you to our Fresh Pack volunteers who provided a delicious breakfast for our entire staff. I am truly grateful for the love and kindness that radiates through the walls of our building each and every day. Our dedicated staff continues to provide our students with meaningful learning opportunities and gives our children a space to thrive.

We are one week away from our Winter Break, and I look forward to continuing to connect with our staff, children, and families. We have a lot to celebrate, and we also will experience some exciting changes on the horizon as we transition to the Educational Village. Please know that safety will remain a priority, and I am proud to say that we have plans in place to ensure a seamless transition for our students, staff, and families.

Please stay tuned for some dates and times where I would love to invite families in to share what might be on your hearts and minds as we head into the new year.

I am here if you have questions or concerns, and I am eager to listen and partner alongside you. Thank you for sending your best to Brookfield each day.

Sincerely,

Lesley Hassen

Principal

News and Notes ⏰ Update on Potential Changes to Middle School Start Times

At Tuesday’s School Board work session, staff from Prismatic Services, Inc., presented options for adjusting start times at FCPS middle schools. As a reminder, Prismatic is charged with developing an action plan to help the School Board reach its goal of starting middle school at or after 8 a.m.

The presentation includes five options for adjusting middle school start times(link is external) based on the consultant’s analysis from community forums, surveys, and interviews with staff, parents, associations, and other groups. The School Board will provide next steps to the superintendent.

Watch a video(link is external) of the work session. Visit the Middle School Start Times webpage(link is external) for more information on the project.

Webinar on Overcoming School Resistance

During the winter, students can feel tired, cold, and at times want to stay home.  Our teachers at Brookfield work to ensure every classroom is a warm, welcoming environment for all students.  It is important that students come to school every day to stay on pace with their learning.

Does your child resist going to school? If so, join the Family Resource Center’s School Resistance webinar on Friday, January 10, 10-11:30 a.m. The webinar will explore how to take care of yourself and set supportive boundaries at home. Register in advance(link is external).

✨ Student attendance is one measure of Strategic Plan(link is external) Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered.

🍲 Food Assistance and Resource Guide

Reminder: Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-6 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Sally Chadbourn (SEChadbourn@fcps.edu(link sends email)) and Emily Zarybnisky (EMZarybnisky@fcps.edu(link sends email)) no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page(link is external)No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.  Families who would like assistance with forms for Full-Time AAP services may come to Brookfield on Wednesday, December 11 between 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.  Spanish interpretation will be provided.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level.  Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically.  At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April.  Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Sally Chadbourn (SEChadbourn@fcps.edu(link sends email)) and Emily Zarybnisky (EMZarybnisky@fcps.edu(link sends email)).

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

Winter is Upon Us!

As the weather will continue to get colder, we would like to remind you that students are not permitted to enter the building until 7:55am. There is no staff supervision before this time. Please do not drop off, or allow your student(s) to arrive at school earlier than 7:55 a.m. Additionally, we kindly ask that your student is wearing appropriate winter gear for outdoor activities, as we do still have outside time during the winter months.
