What is International Education Week?
International Education Week Links to an external site. (IEW) is a wonderful way for students and educators to come together and celebrate the benefits of education and cultural exchange worldwide. This initiative is a joint effort of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State, aimed at promoting programs and opportunities that can prepare students for a global environment.

In 2019, the State Board of Education recognized the third week of November as International Education Week in North Carolina. Each year since then, there have been opportunities across the state for educators to:

- Demonstrate how they are globally engaged, aware, competent, and responsive.
- Expand and share awareness of and interest in global issues and global learning.
- Gain a new understanding and perspective of cultures from around the world.
- Inform public education stakeholders about global education resources, recognitions, policies, and learning opportunities in our state.
Over the years, a variety of activities have been planned by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Global Education Links to an external site. Steering Committee to promote International Education Week including:

- Professional Learning Sessions from NCDPI and the UNC-Duke Area Studies Centers- Links to an external site. Discover the history of our collaboration with the Area Studies Centers in creating engaging sessions focused on various world regions. You can also view highlights from the day-long event, which supported teachers in preparing students to develop the critical thinking skills and cultural and global perspectives and understandings needed to tackle the challenges of both the present and the future.

Global Education Recognitions: Digital Badge, Designations, and Earners provides information about how educators, schools, and districts can be recognized for their global efforts. Those who earn these recognitions are highlighted, sharing their insights on the benefits of receiving the Global Education Digital Badge or being designated as a Global Ready School/District. They discuss how these accolades have positively impacted their teaching, their students, and the overall school community.
